Storytelling Bid Success

Our exciting bid for a story professional to work with us in setting to expand story provision and increase communication, language and literacy outcomes, has been successful. We are one of only 4 settings in North Somerset to have won this amazing opportunity.  We have been linked with Mike Akers, lead professional responsible for doing innovative work with many Bristol nurseries, and the man who developed theatre to engage the under 5s; the ‘travelling light’ theatre group. We are confident that working with Mike will expand the skills of our team to engage children with a range of storytelling, especially non-verbal story, which is great for enhancing literacy development and is Mike’s expert area!

Young Paramedics at the Ready!

Our children had a fantastic day finding out about the job of a paramedic during our recent visit from the South West Ambulance Service. There was lots of practical learning involved; how and when to dial for an ambulance, bandaging one another, listening to their hearts and stomaches and using the pupil dilation torch.

In addition, the children tried on a paramedics helmet and had the chance to explore the ambulance, learn about the equipment aboard, unlock and use the stretcher to collect an injured patient, as well as using the blue lights and sirens! It was a wonderful opportunity to develop our topic about 'heroes' and talk about the real-life heroes within our community.

Pre-School Xmas Shopping Evening

A HUGE thank you to EVERYONE who supported our Christmas shopping evening on Tuesday 11th November 2014. We slashed lasy years total and raised an AMAZING £1,644.00 which will be of huge benefit to Churchill Pre-School. So thanks to everyone who came along and supported the event, donated raffle prizes, sold and bought raffle tickets, donated cakes, and their time. It was a truly fantastic effort by all and thank you all once again.  Photos courtesy of North Somerset Times.

Youngsters Bid Farewell to Wendy

Our youngsters waved goodbye to a much-loved member of staff after she enjoyed her final playtime following a career spanning nearly two decades. Wendy Roan joined Churchill Pre-School in October 1998 and has looked after countless children during that time, becoming a well-known face in the community. But after nearly sixteen years she has stepped down from her caring role and said a fond farewell to the children at a special tea party held in her honour.

Fran Yandell, Chair of Churchill Pre-School Committee said, “Churchill Pre-School has been very privileged to have had such a loyal, dedicated, caring, professional member of staff who has been with us for so many years. Wendy will be dearly missed by the children, staff, parents and the committee. We wish her a very happy, enjoyable retirement which she truly deserves!”

Samantha Stone, Acting Pre-School Leader added, “I have only known Wendy for a short period of time, but have been so privileged to have met her. She has supported Pre-School whole heartedly and her hard work, determination and commitment are awe-inspiring. Her commitment has seen real improvements for the children, and their learning experience, particularly in recent years. The children love her, and we have huge admiration for her. She is most valued and will be missed greatly”.  (June 2014)

Wellies at the Ready!

On Saturday 17th May we held a sponsored welly walk and nature trail at Churchill Sports Centre to help raise vital funds. It was a fantastic day and the wellies were out in force. Well done to all our little welly walkers who helped to raise over £500. A big thank you to Tone Leisure who supported the event.

Pirate Day Success!

Jolly Rogers, eye-patches and heaps of treasure were all used by children as pirates landed in Churchill for our pirate-themed open day. Current and prospective parents had the opportunity to see what the Pre-School has to offer and to meet the fabulous team. The free open day also gave youngsters, aged two to five, the chance to dress up as a pirate for the day!

The Memorial Hall in Ladymead Lane looked like a set from the Pirates of the Caribbean, with the children playing with fake jewels and sand whilst nautical-themed books were also read. The event allowed prospective parents to look around the premises, giving them a chance to meet new acting leader, Samantha Stone, who began her appointment at Churchill Pre-School in January 2014. Pre-Schoolers Meet Shadow!

Churchill Preschool recently received a visit from wildlife rescue charity, Secret World, the West Country’s only 24/7 wildlife rescue service, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and eventual release of orphaned and injured wildlife.

The visit linked into the themes of autumn and hibernation. The charity’s Learning and Outreach Manager, Sophie Hampson brought Shadow, one of their resident tame barn owls. In addition, she brought a wild hedgehog currently rehabilitating with the charity before being released back into the wild.

Sophie said, “Visiting the children was a real delight for me. Helping little ones to understand about native British wildlife at such an early age is vital to help them connect with nature and foster their concern for the world outside. Their keen questions and observations put us adults to shame. It’s a wonderful opportunity to be involved in inspiring their love of the wild.”

Acting Pre-School Leader, Danni King, said, “All the children were very excited to meet Sophie and the animals. To be so close to an owl and a hedgehog was an amazing experience. At the end of the presentation, the children donated food and old newspapers and towels that they collected for the sick animals. They had a wonderful time and it is an experience they will not forget".

Pre-School Leaver’s Graduation Ceremony!

Children going up to “big school” after their time at Churchill Pre-School celebrated by putting on their mini mortar boards and gowns before receiving their personalized certificates in front of proud parents and staff who all cheered with pride!

Danni King, Acting Pre-School Leader, said, “We have loved having all our children and are sad to say goodbye to our school starters but we are very proud of them. The graduation ceremony was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the children’s achievements and development during their time at Pre-School and they have had great fun making and decorating their own graduation hats! ”

She added, “It was an emotional day for everyone, as all the staff and children have bonded so well. We would like to wish all our children every success in their new schools and thank parents and supporters of the Pre-School over the last year.”
